The Myth of ‘Ready’ Leadership: Why Waiting for the Perfect Time Is Costing You Growth

Let’s get this out of the way early.


There is no perfect time. Not for a big decision, not for a team restructure, and definitely not for stepping into leadership that stretches you. If you’re waiting for all the lights to turn green before you pull out of the driveway, you’re going to sit in park forever.


We’ve been sold this myth that great leaders are always prepared, perfectly poised, and endlessly patient. That once things 'settle down,' we’ll finally have the clarity to move. But real leadership? It doesn’t happen in the stillness. It happens in the storm.


Think about it. Most of your biggest growth moments didn’t happen because you felt ready. They happened because you had to make a move. The project needed a lead. The team needed direction. You needed to speak up, even if your voice shook.


That’s what leadership in change looks like. It’s messy. It’s fast. It’s full of doubt. And that’s okay.


Here’s what it’s not:

  • Waiting for approval from people who aren’t in the arena with you

  • Delaying action because of imposter syndrome dressed up as 'strategy'

  • Letting fear of failure keep you from building something bold


The truth is, the 'right time' is rarely marked on your calendar. It shows up as a gut nudge, a late-night realization, or a moment of frustration that finally pushes you into motion. That’s when leaders emerge—not perfectly, but purposefully.


So how do you lead when you don’t feel ready?

  • Get rooted in values. When everything’s shifting, your values are your GPS.

  • Make peace with imperfect action. Clarity often comes after the leap, not before.

  • Name the fear. Once it’s spoken, it usually loses power.

  • Start small, but start. Momentum is a better mentor than motivation.


Change leadership isn’t about waiting for calm waters. It’s about learning to navigate with the current and still set a course. You don’t need to be fearless. You need to be willing.
